As you begin making forward progress in your relationship with God, you will be tempted to keep thinking about the things that are behind you. If you’re not careful, you’ll put so much emotional energy into looking back at past mistakes and failures that you’ll attempt to disqualify yourself from this new journey with God.

Sure, it’s good to be aware of what happened in the past. But too much focusing on the past will keep you from moving forward, and it’s what now lies ahead of you that is of the most importance to you and God.

God wants to clean up whatever is in your past so that you can move forward in life. In your relationship with Him, He wants you to live free. He has provided you with exactly what you need, which is complete forgiveness of sin.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9 (NIV)

As we look in the rearview mirror of life, we will all see things we wish weren’t there. We’ve all made mistakes and have regrets about our past. God says if you simply ask for forgiveness, He will purify you from all unrighteousness. In other words, He’ll make you perfect in His sight. Not only will He forgive you of your sins, but He won’t bring them up again and remind you of what you’ve done.

He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12 (NLT)

When we repent, our sins are no longer a part of who we are. In God’s eyes, the rearview mirror is completely clean, even if we don’t feel like it is. This is huge to understand, because sometimes, even though God has forgiven us, we hold onto guilt, and we don’t feel forgiven.  Whether we feel forgiven or not, we are. The Word of God trumps our feelings. Allow yourself to be forgiven today. Allow the fact that you are forgiven to bring you peace today.
